While he acknowledges that similar drink combinations may exist, he is insistent that he invented the cocktail. He had to create a drink that included triple sec. It is thought that he made up the drink in the summer of 1972 as a competition entry. One story attributes the cocktail to Robert Butts, a bartender at the Beach Inn, a bar situated in Long Island New York.
